Pebblebed Vineyards

Pebblebed vineyards covers around 22 acres on two sites at Ebford and nearby Clyst St George, near Topsham just to the South of Exeter, with the modern winery situated at Marianne Pool Farm, Clyst St George. The two vineyards are less than kilometre apart on South facing slopes above the very picturesque river Exe. The vineyard produces four wines, a white, a red, a rose and a sparkling white.

The white wine is made using a blend of 75% Madeleine Angevine and 25% Seyval Blanc, and has been described as a Devon take on the classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The red utilises a blend of 75% Pinot Noir Early and 25% Rondo grapes, while the Rose uses a blend of Seyval Blanc and Rondo grapes. The sparkling white again uses Seyval Blanc and Rondo grapes, and is made using the ‘méthode champenoise’ with at least 24 months on lees.

The potential to have grapes from different vineyards also adds considerable interest from a winemaking point of view. By vinifying in small parcels from the various vineyard sites and sub-sites, Pebblebed are able to identify the unique character and personality that each locale contributes. The philosophy throughout is to create a range of Pebblebed wines that is distinctive and reflects the personality of the respective terroirs where the grapes grow.
